Virginia Beach couple grateful to be alive after bullet goes through home

The couple said if they hadn’t gone out of town for the Fourth of July, they could have been hit by the bullet.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A Virginia Beach couple is looking for answers after a bullet went through their home.

Rufus Carter told 13News Now that he and his wife returned from vacation to find a bullet hole in their front window.

“I got angry about it, and I was asking the question, ‘Why would somebody do something like this,’” Carter said.

Virginia Beach police say they got a report of a 40-caliber bullet going through a home on Woods Edge Road on July 5. Carter said if he and his wife hadn’t gone out of town for the Fourth of July, they could have been hit.

“If there was any visitors here for the Fourth and we were home, any children was in the kitchen playing, you know, what would’ve happened if that was the case,” he said.

Carter showed 13News Now where the bullet traveled. He said it came through the front window into the kitchen and ricocheted to the living room.

“Went by my lazy boy chair where we always sit down," Carter said.

The bullet ultimately landed on the fireplace right in front of a photo of the couple.

While the couple says they’re grateful to be alive, they’re still shaken from the incident.

“It’s been hard for us ever since we’ve been back. [My wife] gets emotional sometimes. We don’t go in the kitchen unless we have to because now, we’re looking at the window. What’s coming through the window next," Carter said.

Virginia Beach police say they haven’t identified any suspects or a motive. Anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
