Boot Campaign in Hampton Roads raising awareness for veterans all week

The Boot Campaign is holding its National Boot Week. It's a fundraiser and call to action for service members to wear their boots all week.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) — Veterans Day is Sunday, and while there are a variety of ways you might honor veterans, some are doing it in a fashion-driven way by wearing their military service boots around town.

It’s part of a movement from the Boot Campaign.

The organization is a national nonprofit that provides free personalized help to veterans.

With resources across the country, including Hampton Roads, it helps veterans heal physically and mentally from service-related injuries.

Sarah Lucas said after 20 years in the Army, she got help from the Boot Campaign with its wellness program.

"Mine was chronic pain constantly, now I'm able to stand up straight,” Sarah said.

She said the symptoms of her service-related injuries are better.

Her husband, Steve Lucas, said he saw the difference with the well-rounded treatment she received with "body and soul and everything together."

He understands the suffering she had to endure because he retired one month ago after 30 years in the Marine Corps.

“The boots represent patriotism,” said Steve. "The boots are a reminder that until you walk a mile in someone else's shoes, you don't know what they've gone through."

That’s why they’re joining the “National Boot Week” by wearing their boots all week to remind the community that veterans need support after their time in service.

Sarah said people do come up and ask about the boots and the dress.

"So, I'd explain to them what the Boot Campaign is, how they can help," she said.

Walking around town, Sarah said they get different reactions from everyone.

"One little girl wanted my boots,” she said.

These boots are more than just a fashion statement. They're a conversation starter and a reminder for people to remember those who served, and still sacrifice.

"Touch base with one of them and say thank you just because it is a sacrifice,” said Sarah.
