VIRGINIA BEACH, (WVEC) — Bond was denied Wednesday to the head of Virginia Beach's Human Rights Commission, who earlier this week was arrested in connection with two domestic violence-related incidents.
38-year-old Rajeeb Islam, who is also a captain with Virginia Beach Emergency Medical Services, was charged Monday on two counts of assaulting a family member and felony attempted malicious wounding.
No testimony was given at Islam's hearing Wednesday, but the judge denied bond because Islam allegedly tried to run the victim over with his car.
According to online court records, Islam and his accuser were in a current divorce battle. A hearing had been held as recently as last week. with another motions hearing that had been scheduled for the end of the month, records show.
Virginia Beach EMS spokesman Bruce Nedelka says Islam will be placed on administrative duties during the criminal process. He says the incidents were reported when Islam was off-duty.
Both Nedelka and commission vice chair Sylvia Nery-Strickland say their respective organizations will wait until the process plays out before making any decisions.
Islam has been a commission member since 2013 and was appointed chair in April 2017.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for February 29.
