Death investigation underway after body found in water in Virginia Beach

The body was discovered in the 4400 block of E Drum Castle Ct Wednesday afternoon. Virginia Beach police are investigating the cause of death.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — An investigation is underway after a body was discovered in the water in Virginia Beach on Wednesday.

The body was found in a small lake in the 4400 block of E Drum Castle Court at around 3:15 p.m.

The Virginia Beach Police Department and the Virginia Beach Fire Department worked for hours to recover the body and investigate the scene, but VBPD Officer Jude Brenya told 13News Now it's still too early to determine the person's age or sex.

Brenya also said it's too early to determine if the death was the result of foul play or an accident. He added it's understandable that nearby residents may be shaken up after the discovery, explaining, "We’ve had a lot of residents come out and try to understand what’s going on and what’s happening, and definitely we understand there are some concerns."

Michael Hicks lives nearby and described the neighborhood as "quiet." He, and other residents we spoke to off-camera, said it's rare to see people in the lake. Hicks said, "I don’t think people are allowed to swim in there."

Regardless, Hicks says he's not concerned for his safety following the incident, saying, "I think it’s just a one-time incident, I feel pretty safe here."

VBPD is currently investigating the cause of death.
