VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Despite the gloomy weather across Hampton Roads Sunday, one local event still carried on.
Dozens gathered at Mount Trashmore in Virginia Beach to watch the lighting of a 30-foot-tall menorah, as part of the "Community Hanukkah Extravaganza."
Organizers with Chabad of Tidewater told 13News Now that they wouldn’t let the weather put a damper on the event.
“I really find Hanukkah to be like a right of religious freedom," said Rashi Brashevitzky with Chabad of Tidewater. "Here we are in America -- we can have this giant menorah out on display for all to see, for all to come and take part in this message of unity.”
Both Rep. Jen Kiggans and Virginia Beach City Councilman Joashua Schulman helped light the menorah.
Brashevitzky said this year marked the 42nd annual "Community Hanukkah Extravaganza."
On December 13, Chabad of Tidewater will also host a "Grand Menorah Car Parade" starting at 5:45 p.m. For more information on the parade, click here.
