Urban League of Hampton Roads hosts 40th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Breakfast in Virginia Beach

Community members and leaders gathered Monday in honor of MLK Jr. and recognized leaders in Hampton Roads who exemplify service to the community.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Urban League of Hampton Roads and community members gathered in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. as part of the annual event.

The 40th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Leaders Awards Breakfast was held Monday morning in the Virginia Beach Convention Center's Grand Ballroom. The event honors Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy and recognizes dedicated leaders in the community.

Since 1984, the awards have been presented to people or groups who "exemplify service to the community, demonstrate the values modeled by Dr. King, and make significant contributions to the Hampton Roads community." 

Among those honored this year were former Virginia Governor Douglas Wilder, who received the E.L. Hamm Lifetime Achievement Award.

Clint Smith, #1 New York Times bestselling author and Atlantic staff writer, was the keynote speaker for the awards breakfast.
