Suffolk police said all three men have been arrested in connection to a shooting on Sunday, Nov. 28.
The shooting happened around 3 p.m. in the 1100 block of Cogic Square. When officers got to the area, they found 21-year-old Jason Javon Lewis of Portsmouth and 24-year-old Kareem Jamal Hunter of Suffolk had been shot.
“I saw two young men loaded onto to ambulance," said Val McKinney, who has lived in the area for about four years. "One wasn't looking like he was in good shape."
Police said Lewis died from his injuries. Hunter still was in the hospital for treatment Monday afternoon.
On Dec. 2, police announced Hunter had been arrested on charges including first-degree murder.
Officers were looking for two more suspects in connection to the deadly shooting, 21-year-old Dennis Whitehead, and 21-year-old Latrawn Armstrong.
However, both Armstrong and Whitehead turned themselves into police.
All three men are facing several charges including:
- First Degree Murder
- Discharge Firearm 1000 ft. of School
- Shooting with Intent to Maim
- Use of Firearm Committing Felony
“It puts a type of fear in you that it's hard to come home late at night from work not knowing what's going to transpire," McKinney said.
McKinney, who said it was not the first shooting in her neighborhood, wondered what could curb gun violence, thinking that officers in the community would be a deterrent.
"You’re hoping the police presence will come to the neighborhood just to keep us safe," she said. "You know we have children that play out in the neighborhood and you just get weary that something's going to happen," said McKinney Sunday.
