Suffolk appoints interim police chief to the position permanently

James "Danny" Buie has worked in the Suffolk Police Department for 27 years.

SUFFOLK, Va. — Suffolk has a new police chief and it's a familiar name for the city.

City Manager Albert Moor II announced the appointment of James "Danny" Buie as Suffolk Chief of Police, effective Monday, July 8.

Buie has been serving the role of interim police chief since last October, following the retirement of former Police Chief Al Chandler. Buie has worked in the Suffolk Police Department for 27 years.

The city said Buie was chosen following a nationwide search, which included a community feedback survey, internal input from the police department, and what the city called a "comprehensive panel selection process."
