SUFFOLK, Va. — A man has died after a shooting in Suffolk early Monday.
Suffolk police say that around 2:45 a.m., dispatch received a call reporting a man with a gunshot wound in the parking lot the Heritage Acres Apartments on Nansemond Parkway.
When officers arrived they found the man, identified as 26-year-old Devon Eason of Suffolk, near a black vehicle. He was deceased upon arrival.
“It’s always frustrating to find out that somebody lost their life," said Suffolk resident Amir Humphries.
Several police cars lined up at the entrance of this parking lot at Heritage Acres Apartments as detectives spent nearly four hours investigating the deadly shooting. They focused much of their investigation on the black vehicle sitting in the parking lot. Hours later, that car was towed from the scene with a smashed front windshield and what appeared to be bullet holes in the door.
Humphries has lived in the city for about 20 years. He says he’s surprised to hear about the deadly shooting in that neighborhood.
“Normally, I don’t hear about shootings in this area but I’m quite sure it happens just about everywhere,” Humphries said.
Other neighbors who did not want to talk on camera say this is a relatively quiet area. They say it’s uncommon to see so many officers surround their homes.
One man says he’s more cautious around the complex today. He said he made sure to stand by his children at the bus stop as they waited for the school bus to arrive and that he wanted to know what sparked gunfire early this morning.
Police did not release any suspect information.
