SUFFOLK, Va. — Suffolk Fire & Rescue responded to a fire on Tuesday morning.
Firefighters responded to a warehouse fire in the 2000 block of Northgate Commerce Parkway around 1:17 a.m. When crews arrived, they found smoke coming from the back of the warehouse.
The fire was located in a recycling compactor that was full of cardboard. The origin of the fire was the auger spun that broke down the cardboard boxes. The firefighter removed the compactor and placed hose lines inside the warehouse and loading docks to prevent the fire from spreading. The fire was under control at 1:53 a.m.
The fire was contained to the metal box. However, smoke entered the first floor of the warehouse. Crews coordinated with the warehouse's maintenance staff to ventilate the smoke. After ventilation and air quality checks were completed, employees returned at 4 a.m.
No one was injured.
The cause of the fire was determined accidental.
