Suffolk construction worker dies after medical emergency in 15-foot trench

Suffolk's fire chief said paramedics started advanced life support down in the trench while crews executed a rope rescue to get him out.

SUFFOLK, Va. — A man has died after experiencing a medical emergency at a Suffolk construction site Thursday afternoon.

Around 1:15 p.m., Suffolk Fire & Rescue crews were sent out to Second Avenue and Pitchkettle Road for a report of an unconscious person.

They found a construction worker at the bottom of a 15-foot-deep trench box in an area where contractors were repairing utilities in a roadway.

According to Suffolk Fire Chief Mike Barakey, paramedics started advanced life support treatment down in the trench while the department's Technical Rescue Team executed a rope rescue to get him out.

Barakey said the paramedics continued advanced life support care on the man all the way to the hospital, where he later passed away.

The Suffolk Police Department is investigating the incident.
