SUFFOLK, Va. — One person was killed and two others were critically injured in a car crash in Suffolk on Monday morning, officials said.
According to the Suffolk Department of Fire & Rescue, the crash happened around 7 a.m. at the intersection of Portsmouth Boulevard and C Street.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police said a vehicle driven by 52-year-old Ray Fulayter of Chesapeake was driving westbound on Portsmouth Boulevard when it collided with another vehicle that had two people inside.
The two people inside that vehicle were taken to the hospital by ambulance, while Fulayter was airlifted to the hospital by a Nightingale helicopter. Fulayter later died from his injuries.
Police said the other two people remain in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
As of 10:41 a.m., the westbound lanes of Portsmouth Boulevard are closed, including the Highway 58 westbound exit for Downtown Suffolk. City officials said a detour is in place.
The crash remains under investigation.
