SUFFOLK, Va. — Firefighters battled a blaze that caused heavy smoke damage to a single-story ranch style home in Suffolk and displaced a resident Saturday evening.

Suffolk Fire & Rescue began working the fire in the vicinity of East Washington Street and Carver Avenue at around 5 p.m. Photos of the scene show thick, gray smoke billowing from the roof and large flames bursting from the home's attached carport.

Crews searched the home and executed what they describe as an "aggressive interior attack."

The fire was brought under control by 5:20 p.m., according to officials, who noted the house "sustained moderate fire and heavy smoke damage." Crews remained at the scene to monitor hotspots.

Officials said no residents or firefighters were hurt in the incident. One person is displaced.

Dominion Energy was also called to the scene as a live power line "complicated" firefighting efforts, according to Suffolk Fire & Rescue.

An investigation is underway to determine what sparked the blaze. Investigators say it does not appear the cause is "suspicious" at this time, however.
