Fire causes 'extensive' damage to large Suffolk home Sunday morning

Suffolk Fire Chief Barakey said the fire extended up into the room above the garage and into the attic before it was brought under control around 6:30 a.m.

SUFFOLK, Va. — Three people are displaced from their home after heavy fire damaged a two-story house in Suffolk Sunday morning.

Suffolk Fire Chief Mike Barakey said crews were called out to Winona Trail around 5:30 a.m. for a report of a residential structure fire.

Arriving minutes later, firefighters found heavy fire coming from a two-care garage that was attached to a large two-story home. Barakey said the fire extended up into the room above the garage and into the attic before it was brought under control around 6:30 a.m.

No one was injured, but the house received "extensive fire and smoke damage," he said.

Three adults are getting help from the American Red Cross while they can't stay in the house.

Barakey said the Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
