SUFFOLK, Va. — Three Suffolk City Council seats were up for election this year, with a total of five candidates running.
Sleepy Hole Borough
With provisional votes outstanding, challenger Ebony Wright is projected to win against three-term incumbent Roger Fawcett with 53% of the vote compared to his 46%.
The Sleepy Hole Borough includes areas such as Harbour View, Bennett’s Creek and Driver. Fawcett said his biggest issues were traffic congestion, smart growth, and affordable housing. Wright said she believed there was enough room in Suffolk for affordable housing but believed the city’s growth has outpaced its infrastructure.
Whaleyville Borough
In the city’s rural Whaleyville Borough, incumbent LeOtis Williams won his second term with 60% of the vote over challenger Jason Wooldridge, who had 39%. Provisional votes remain outstanding.
The Whaleyville Borough includes much of the southeastern portion of the city, including the village of Whaleyville itself as well as the Airport area. The borough also stretches north to encompass part of downtown.
During the campaign, Williams noted things that had been done including repaving roads throughout the city as well as the council’s good working relationship.
Wooldridge emphasized he wanted growth to stay in the downtown area and help revitalize it rather than continually expanding outward.
Nansemond Borough
Nansemond Borough incumbent Lue Ward ran unopposed and won reelection to his fourth term. The Nansemond Borough includes areas such as Pughsville, Huntersville, and Burbage Grant.
