SUFFOLK, Va. — Suffolk Sheriff David D. Miles won his first election handily on Tuesday, being the only candidate on the ballot for the special election.
Miles was sworn in as sheriff on July 9 after the retirement of previous sheriff E.C. Harris. He had previously been the chief deputy in the sheriff’s office.
Miles has over 18 years of law enforcement experience and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Norfolk State University. He has been with the Suffolk Sheriff’s Office since 2015 and became chief deputy in 2019.
Now that he has been chosen in a special election, Miles will fill the remainder of Harris’ term through Dec. 31, 2025. Suffolk voters will again elect a sheriff next year to serve beginning in 2026.
