5-acre brush fire in Suffolk causes propane tanks to explode

During the blaze, officials say three propane tanks exploded.

SUFFOLK, Va. — Nearly five acres of brush and trees caught fire off of Hosier Road in Suffolk on Tuesday afternoon, prompting officials to shut down a section of the roadway.

The fire ignited on a private lot located near Hosier and Riddick Lassiter Roads. On that lot was a storage shed, two tractor-trailers, and several propane tanks. Suffolk Fire & Rescue said three of the propane tanks exploded as a result.

Heavy smoke was coming from the blaze when crews first arrived, with Suffolk Fire & Rescue saying the blaze "threatened" four nearby residences. Luckily, none of those homes were damaged as firefighters managed to bring the fire under control at around 5:40 p.m.

No injuries were reported. Fire officials have not yet said what sparked the fire.
