Battalion chief to pay fine related to hit-and-run crash

Suffolk police officers charged Owen Thomasson III after he ran into a number of objects including a pair of utility poles.

SUFFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- A judge said a Suffolk Fire and Rescue battalion chief will pay a $250 fine after he ran into utility poles, mailboxes, and a bush in a pick-up truck.

Police said Owen Thomasson left the scene after the incident in the 800 block of Wilroy Rd. on October 14, 2017.

Someone called emergency dispatchers around 11 p.m. that night after seeing the truck hit one of two utility poles.

Officers found the empty truck a short time later at the intersection of East Constance Road and North Main Street.

Thomasson entered guilty pleas to four misdemeanor charges: Destruction of Property, Obstruction of Justice (2 counts), and Reckless Driving (a charge that was amended from an initial DWI charge).

Besides imposing a fine, the judge sentenced Thomasson to 36 months and 90 days in jail, but he suspended the jail time.

Thomasson remains on unpaid administrative leave from the city.
