Woman and child hurt after vehicle hit by train while crossing railroad tracks

Police said the vehicle was going across the track while the crossing arms were coming down, resulting in the train hitting its back end.

SUFFOLK, Va. — A woman and child were hurt following a crash involving an Amtrak train Friday morning, the Suffolk Police Department said.

Officials responded after Suffolk Emergency Communications Center received a call that an Amtrak train hit a vehicle in the 400 block of Bank Street around 9:26 a.m. When police arrived, they found a woman and a child who were in the vehicle at the time had been injured. The woman was treated on the scene and the child was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Following an investigation, Suffolk police determined that the vehicle drove across the track while the crossing gates were down, causing the train to hit the back end of the vehicle.

None of the 140 passengers or crew members on the Amtrak were injured, according to an Amtrak representative. The train was traveling from Norfolk to Boston.

Police said charges against the driver are pending.

The railroad crossing at Bank Street and Moore Avenue was closed for about an hour but is now back open.

The accident remains under investigation.
