PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- 15-year-old Will Patterson Jr. will be tried as an adult after police said he shot an officer as she was attempting to detain him.
The incident happened on November 6 around 2:45 p.m. in the 2500 block of Hickory Street.
Officials said Officer Angelina Baaklini recognized the teenager as a runaway and tried to detain him.
Baaklini was shot five times as she tried to handcuff Patterson. Police found him a short time later still wearing one of the officer's handcuffs on his wrist.
Patterson faces the following charges:
- Attempted capital murder on law enforcement
- 4 counts discharging a firearm in public resulting in bodily injury
- Malicious injury to law enforcement officer
- 2 counts use of firearm
- Concealed weapon
- Underage possession of firearm
Baaklini had to undergo two surgeries, but she was released from the hospital on Nov. 21.
The judge dismissed two charges including escape from law enforcement officer and receiving stolen goods.
A grand jury is expected to hear the charges.
