Suspect killed in shooting involving Portsmouth Police

According to Portsmouth Police, the shooting happened on Navajo Trail around 11:11 p.m., not far from Portsmouth Boulevard.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- Virginia State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened overnight in Portsmouth.

According to Portsmouth Police, the shooting happened on Navajo Trail around 11:11 p.m., not far from Portsmouth Boulevard.

Police received a 911 call about a possible home invasion. Arriving officers were then allegedly confronted by two armed suspects, a man and a woman. A spokesperson for Portsmouth Police said the suspects refused to comply with the officers' orders, which led to one officer firing their gun, hitting the male suspect.

The injured suspect, identified as 29-year-old Willie Rogers Marable, was taken to the hospital and died shortly afterward. The second suspect, 32-year-old Erica Jasmine Brown, was taken into custody without further incident. Brown is charged with attempted burglary, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

No police officers were hurt.

Virginia State Police will handle the shooting investigation. The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave, pending the investigation's outcome.

Once their investigation is concluded, State Police will turn over their findings to the Portsmouth Commonwealth Attorney for review.
