Portsmouth woman carjacked at gunpoint, says she's 'thankful to be alive'

A home security camera caught the moment two juveniles approached a Portsmouth woman with a gun and stole her car in broad daylight.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A home security camera caught the moment two juveniles carjacked a Portsmouth woman at gunpoint.

Felecia Smith told 13News Now that it all happened Saturday at around 9:15 a.m. as she was getting ready to leave for a funeral.

She said when she saw two boys walking down her street, she greeted them with, 'Good morning.' But, that’s when things took a turn.

The security footage shows one of the boys approach Smith with a gun.

“He said, ‘Give me that purse. Where the money at?'” Smith recalled.

After the two took off in her car, Smith said she called the police.

Portsmouth police say the two juveniles drove the stolen car into Norfolk, where officers tried to stop them and followed them back to Portsmouth.

The car eventually crashed on Effingham Street. Police say after a short foot pursuit, officers took the juveniles into custody.

Smith said she can’t wrap her head around how this happened in broad daylight.

“My front door was wide open. My kids were here. I have a grandmother here that’s on hospice. My husband was here and my dad," she said.

While nearly a week has passed since the incident, Smith said the moment still plays in her mind.

“I can honestly say that I have cried everyday," Smith said. "When I’m coming out of the door, I’m beginning to look side to side, you know, looking left and right.”

Smith said she's thankful that she and her family are safe.

“I'm just thankful to be alive because it could've gone a whole other way," Smith said. "I’m so glad that I was able to remain calm in the process, and I can honestly say that it was nothing but God.”

Smith said her car is totaled after the incident. Portsmouth police say the juveniles are now facing robbery, carjacking, and multiple firearm charges.
