PORTSMOUTH, Va. — For some Portsmouth residents recently released from jail, it can be challenging to return to the workforce.
“Not having the tools to apply,” said Nahla Saleh, the workforce development manager with Portsmouth@Work, which is through the city's economic development department. “They really have the mindset that they won’t qualify because they have a background.”
Saleh said the city hosts monthly re-entry meetings but she felt called to provide another resource. So, she and her team came up with the two-day Return to Work Career Readiness Program.
“I don’t think they understand how to showcase their skills,” Saleh said. “What this program is going to do is teach them and show them in words and on paper.”
The program is the first of its kind for Portsmouth@Work. It will help formerly incarcerated people build their resume, work on interview skills and most importantly, get the support they need.
“I noticed the trend of not having support,” she said. “And they go back and, you know, commit another crime.”
She said building that mentorship will not only help them through the application process but also build their confidence.
“It’s going to allow them to tell their story and explain how they want to change their life,” she said.
Program attendees will have one-on-one networking opportunities with employers. Saleh adds the program will also connect them with nonprofits and departments to get them the resources they need outside the program.
"Portsmouth wants to do better," she said. "With the resources that we're giving our residents, they are going to do better. With the help of a lot of nonprofits and city departments, we're coming together to give our residents these resources and a program like this to give them tools..and the confidence to be able to walk away after two days knowing how to do it own their own."
The program takes place August 15th and 16th. Saleh said tomorrow is the last day to register. To apply for the event, call the Porstmouth@Work office at 757-393-8832.
