PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A 17-year-old boy was hurt following a shooting on Friday afternoon, the Portsmouth Police Department said.
Police responded to a call reporting a shooting in the 4000 block of River Shore Road shortly before 1 p.m. When offers arrived, they found the teen suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to the hospital.
Following an investigation, police said the shooting happened as a result of an argument over a parking space.
A Portsmouth Public Schools official said the shooting did not happen on school property. However, Churchland High School and Churchland Middle School were placed on an outside hold, which was lifted shortly after 2 p.m. Schools were dismissed normally, and police stress at no time students or school personal were at risk of danger.
13News Now spoke with the victim's mother, who said her son was shot in the shoulder and doctors are determining when they'll perform surgery.
"He’s talking. He’s not able to walk and stuff right now because of the way the shoulder is the way they have it up," the mother explained. "So, he can’t walk and stuff like that right now and they said he probably will have to do physical therapy, but as for now he’s good."
Police have not said if they have a suspect in custody at this time.
