PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Portsmouth is hosting a series of vibrant events at various downtown hotspots and local schools for Black History Month and beyond.
Black History Now: Art is Revolutionary is a collaboration between Grammy-winning Home Studio, the city of Portsmouth and Portsmouth Museums. The multi-week series will celebrate black excellence in the creative arts.
Organizers say you can follow Portsmouth's Instagram for updates on all the events coming up because it's not just happening in February.
On Saturday, they are hosting a showing of "Bad Things Happen In Philadelphia" (2023) at the Commodore Theatre starting at noon. The film is directed and produced by Sundance Institute Fellow Kyra Knox, Home Studio, and executive produced by NBA legend Allen Iverson. "The documentary tackles the heartbreaking issue of gun violence in Philadelphia, where over 500 lives were lost in 2021 alone."
In the next few weeks, Black History Now will host other events like a fashion showcase, music curated by The Record Academy with local Portsmouth musicians and an event focusing on black literature in poetry.
Stay tuned in on Portsmouth's social media and website for events coming in the future.
