Portsmouth schools respond to social media threat against Waters Middle School

The school's principal said police will have an increased presence at the school on Wednesday.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Portsmouth Public Schools will have additional police presence at Waters Middle School on Wednesday thanks to social media threats, according to spokeswoman Dr. Lauren Nolasco.

Nolasco stated in a response to an inquiry from 13News Now that police were made aware of the threat “well after the end of the school day” Tuesday.

Nolasco said police were investigating.

Principal Craig Harris sent a message to his school community to make them aware of the threat as well as the increased police presence planned for Wednesday:

“Good evening, Waters families –

"I am writing you to share that tonight our administration was made aware that a threat against our school was posted on social media. Police are currently investigating, and, as we have seen in the past, they will take immediate action and pursue criminal charges for those found responsible. Tomorrow, as both a precaution as well as a reassurance to students and staff, we will have extra law enforcement at our school.

"Parents, please use this as an opportunity to talk with your children about appropriate social media use and making good choices. Students who make threats – even as jokes – face real consequences. Please remind your children that we all have a role in keeping our school safe. If they hear something or see something online, they should immediately say something to a teacher, administrator or other adult. Thank you for your partnership in this effort and your continued support of Waters Middle School."
