PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- The Portsmouth Police Department will be participating in an active-shooter response exercise organized by the U.S. Coast Guard on Tuesday.
This exercise, held at Coast Guard Base Portsmouth between 8 a.m and noon, will involve simulated active shooters and include take downs, building sweeps, as well as medical casualty response.
"The goal of this exercise is to jointly test and improve effective readiness of the police and fire departments when responding to high threat situations on base", said Sergeant S. Blystone of the Portsmouth Police Department Training Unit and SWAT Team.
Traffic coming onto and leaving the base may be disrupted. Expect a large law enforcement presence in the area.
