Portsmouth police seek help in finding man who hasn't been seen since November

Police say that 33-year-old Scott Jacobs was last seen in late November of 2023 in the 1100 block of Tatem Avenue. His family hasn't heard or seen him since then.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Portsmouth police are searching for a missing man who hasn't been since in around 2 months.

Police say that 33-year-old Scott Jacobs was last seen in late November of 2023 in the 1100 block of Tatem Avenue. His family hasn't heard or seen him since then.

Jacobs is described as a white man, around 158 pounds and 5 foot 9 inches. He was last seen wearing a dark hoodie, light grey sweatpants, a baseball cap, black slide-on shoes, and a black backpack.

Jacobs's stepfather, Shawn Murphy, said it's out of character for his stepson to leave without mentioning a word to his parents. "It's not Scott. It's not Scott," said Murphy.

"He spent all his time upstairs in his apartment playing his game," said Murphy.

Jacobs' mother, Theresa Murphy, said she remembers when Jacobs left home in late November. She said he told her he would return home, but they said he never did.

"He didn't come back, and it was like, where was he? And then days went by, and he still didn't come back," said Murphy.

Theresa said she did not immediately report her son missing because she had a stroke. However, family members went out looking for him instead.

"I had a stroke, I was in the hospital, took a couple of weeks for us to get back on our feet here, but yet my daughter, who's 24 years old, is out looking for him, my husband's out looking for him, then I started going out looking for him," said Murphy.

Theresa said it is critical that her son is found. While she was not specific about her son's condition, she said he needs his medication.

"If he is anywhere and can see or hear this, just let me know; go to the police and tell them to call my mother, my dad, my sister, my family, and let them know that I'm okay," said Murphy.

Murphy said her son may have grown out a beard. He is also not wearing his glasses so his appearance may have changed.

Anyone with information on her whereabouts is urged to call the Portsmouth Police Department Major Crimes Unit at (757) 393-8536 or to submit an anonymous tip through the Portsmouth Crime Line at 1-888-562-5887.
