PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Portsmouth Fire Rescue & Emergency Services (PFR) responded to an incident in the 500 block of Lanier Crescent around 6 p.m. on Thursday after someone called 911 saying they smelled smoke.

When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the front door of the residence. Crews were able to bring the small fire under control and extinguish it before the fire spread to two attached units.

The home was occupied by one adult man who was able to get out unharmed, but he will be displaced due to smoke and water damage. He will stay with family, PFR said. There were no reported injuries.

PFR said the fire appeared to be started accidentally, but the Portsmouth Fire Marshal's Office will continue investigating.
