Portsmouth fire displaces 3 people

Portsmouth Fire Rescue & Emergency Services responded to a multi-family structure fire in the 1500 block of Highland Avenue on Monday.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A Portsmouth fire has displaced three people on Monday, the Portsmouth Fire Rescue and Emergency Services said.

Portsmouth Fire Rescue and Emergency Services responded to a call at 5:38 p.m. reporting a multi-family structure fire in the 1500 block of Highland Avenue.

Portsmouth Fire, Rescue, & Emergency Services and Navy Regional Mid-Atlantic responded to the fire. 31 Fire Rescue personnel responded to this incident.

The Fire Rescue crew activated the working fire incident action plan, extinguished the fire and got it under control. The fire was out at about 5:59 p.m.

One occupant was found sitting in the doorway of the home and required assistance to get out. The occupant was transported to the hospital for evaluation and observation.

A firefighter suffered minor injuries after rescuing a cat from inside the building.

The Red Cross is assisting two adults and one child who were displaced by the fire.

Portsmouth Fire Marshall's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
