Portsmouth confirms city's first positive case of COVID-19

The patient, a man in his 60s, had recently traveled to Europe.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Portsmouth Health Department says a resident has tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus, the first positive case reported in the city.

The patient, a man in his 60s, had recently traveled to Europe.

"We know that this case was travel-related and we have not seen community spread," said Portsmouth Health Department Health Director Dr. Lauren James in a news release. "We will continue to work closely with our Health Care partners to support our community during this pandemic."

As of Thursday afternoon, the Virginia Department of Health reported 94 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the state. The Portsmouth case is not yet included in the state numbers.
