PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Just days after appointing a new city assessor, Portsmouth City Council is going back on the decision.
In a special meeting that lasted more than an hour Monday night, members unanimously voted to rescind the appointment of Anthony George for the position.
The city council did not explain why.
This vote comes less than a week after the council ousted Janey Culpepper from the role. Culpepper had been in the position less than a year, taking over the interim role from former city assessor Patrick Dorris.
In a 5-1 vote in March, the city council agreed to fire Dorris amid concerns about high real estate assessment rates.
