Portsmouth celebrates Olympic gold medalist with LaShawn Merritt Day

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- It was a special homecoming for LaShawn Merritt.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- It was a special homecoming for LaShawn Merritt.

Merritt is a four-time Olympic medalist and a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. He won two gold medals in the Bejing Olympics, and added two more medals during the 2016 Rio Olympics. He won a gold medal in the Men's 4x400m and a bronze medal in the Men's 400m.

The City, along with Portsmouth Public Schools, honored this hometown hero by declaring Friday "LaShawn Merritt Day."

The celebration included an evening parade and Merritt will receive the Key to the City in a presentation during half-time at the I.C. Norcom vs. Woodrow Wilson football game, held at Norcom's Joe G. Langston Stadium.
