Man dies after shooting in Portsmouth, police say

When police arrived at the scene on Thursday afternoon, they found 25-year-old Arthur Lee Harris Jr. lying in the middle of the street with a gunshot wound.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A man was shot on Augustine Circle in Portsmouth Friday afternoon and later succumbed to his injuries, police said.

The investigation began around 2:15 p.m. when dispatchers got a report of a gunshot in the 3800 block of Augustine Circle.

When police arrived they found 25-year-old Arthur Lee Harris Jr. lying in the middle of the street with a gunshot wound.

Harris was taken to the hospital by Portsmouth Fire and REscue medics and succumbed to his injuries.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

Rashad Whitehead said he was surprised to find a large police presence in his neighborhood Friday evening.

"Yes, I'm surprised because these are school hours," said Whitehead.

He said that he was upset that a shooting would happen in broad daylight.

"Around this time, this shouldn't be happening, it shouldn't be happening anyway, but around this time. You got the middle schoolers, you go the preschooler kids out here, so like that's uncalled for."

A neighbor said she called 911 when she heard several rounds of gunfire outside of her home.

"I heard 10 gunshots, and a guy is lying in front of my house."

The neighbor said shootings in the middle of the day are out of the ordinary for her neighborhood.

"Who does that in the middle of the day, when it's time for the kids to get out of school? " the neighbor asked.
