PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Healthy Portsmouth is offering an opportunity for people to get a mammogram.
The organization is a coalition of community members working to coordinate appointments and get women access to important cancer prevention measures.
Healthy Portsmouth cites data that shows Portsmouth ranks among the least healthy counties in Virginia and more women die from breast cancer in Portsmouth than the other six core cities in Hampton Roads to point to why efforts like this are essential.
Their 2024 Year of Mammography aims to facilitate appointments for women in Portsmouth by connecting them to Sentara's mobile mammography unit. Most women 50 and over with insurance can have their mammogram fully covered and those without insurance can apply for Every Woman's Life through the Virginia Department of Health for assistance.
The monthly screening in February is taking place on the 20th from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. You can schedule appointments by calling 757-736-0040 or emailing healthyportsmouth@gmail.com. If you can't make that date still contact them for an appointment!
