This marks the 21st homicide in the City of Portsmouth so far this year, according to 13News Now records.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A homicide investigation is underway in Portsmouth.

Portsmouth police say officers were called to the scene of a shooting in the 1200 block of Wilcox Avenue just before 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

There, officers found a man with a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.

The victim was later identified as 46-year-old Antwain Lamont Terry.

13News Now spoke to neighbors who recalled hearing gunshots Saturday evening.

“I hear some shooting. I hear bang, bang, bang!” one man, who wished to remain anonymous, recalled.

“I was up in the bedroom, but I heard shots...everybody heard shots. So, that’s why everybody was coming out their door and looking out their windows," another neighbor said.

Neighbors told 13News Now they saw the injured man lying in the street. One woman said she witnessed someone ride a bike away from the scene. The incident left her rattled.

“It is kind of shocking, in a neighborhood that something like that would happen," the woman said.

This marks the 21st homicide in the City of Portsmouth so far this year, according to 13News Now records.

No suspects have been identified at this time and the motive has not been determined. This investigation remains active with the Portsmouth Police Major Crimes Unit.
