5 firefighters injured battling Portsmouth house fire

5 firefighters were injured while exposed to dangerous conditions fighting a house fire that displaced one resident.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Five firefighters are in the hospital after battling a house fire that left one person displaced in Portsmouth. 

According to the Portsmouth Fire Department, the fire started around 6:45 p.m. in the kitchen of a house in the 4800 block of Augustine Circle. As fire crews worked to fight the fire, the conditions of the flames quickly changed, forcing them to exit the house. 

These conditions injured five firefighters who were quickly taken to a nearby hospital. They are expected to recover from their injuries. 

The fire was controlled just before 7:20 p.m. One person was displaced as a result of the fire, but is being assisted by the Red Cross. 

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
