Worker has life-threatening injuries after falling into fuel storage tank in Norfolk

Norfolk Fire Rescue arrived to find a worker had fallen about eight feet into the tank and was lying facedown and unconscious.

NORFOLK, Va. — One person is in the hospital after falling into an empty fuel storage tank at a closed gas station, Norfolk Fire Rescue said.

The accident happened in the 1000 block of West Little Creek Road shortly before 1 p.m. in the Titustown area of the city. First responders arrived to find a worker had fallen about eight feet into the tank and was lying facedown and unconscious.

Emergency crews donned appropriate levels of PPE and checked atmospheric monitors inside the tank to go inside and rescue the person.

Norfolk Fire Rescue said the person was removed from the tank and taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The accident is under investigation.
