What's to come of dilapidated Military Circle mall hotel with $3 million price tag?

"If they can change it to something beautiful or something more useful...it would be a great boost to the economy," a neighbor said.

NORFOLK, Va. — Aerial images and video show the crumbling state of the old DoubleTree hotel at the Military Circle Mall in Norfolk.

13News Now wanted to know what's going to happen to the long-abandoned site.

The eyesore towers above the mall are complete with broken windows, a dirty pool, and a crumbling roof.

The drone pictures were recently captured by Brandon Upright, and give a better idea of the disrepair the old hotel has fallen into.

It's so bad, the City of Norfolk condemned the building.

13News Now learned the old hotel closed in 2009. It's not owned by the same people who own the mall, despite its location in the middle of the shopping center.

According to the real estate company behind the property's listing, SL Nusbaum, its owner purchased it with the intent of turning it into another hotel.

That plan was later scrapped, though, and now the vision is to sell it and develop it into an apartment complex or other family housing.

An SL Nusbaum agent admits it's a 'gut job,' but said the structure has 'good bones.' The price tag is $3 million.

Neighbors in the area, like Tina Jimenez, want to see it turned into something of value in an area that's already struggling.

"It would be a big boost, and especially with other businesses leaving, they would encourage them to come back," she said.

Another woman, who has lived in the area for 25 years, who did not want to be identified, said she didn't even notice the problems at the vacant site because she's become so accustomed to the mall area's turnover and emptiness.

"I guess I don't go by there enough to think about it or close to it because we don't go there much, because there's not much left of the mall anymore," she said.

SL Nusbaum said the property receives routine interest, but a handful of offers have all been declined. Currently, nothing is in the works.

The realty group hopes the revitalization of the structure could help out the mall but said selling it in the first place may be hard due to the mall's decline.

That anonymous neighbor is jaded about the longevity of anything in the area, however.

"It's almost like a surprise, 'what's coming next?'" she said. "I think for the people that live around here, we just know that it's going to be change and something is coming, we just don't know what."
