Traffic nightmare after vehicle fire shuts down eastbound HRBT for much of Tuesday

Norfolk Fire Rescue, Naval Regional Fire and Hampton Fire Rescue responded to a truck fire on Interstate 64 Eastbound at the HRBT.

NORFOLK, Va. — A vehicle fire caused multiple lane closures on the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT) that lasted for over five hours on Tuesday, well into the evening rush hour.

Norfolk Fire Rescue, Naval Regional Fire, and Hampton Fire Rescue responded to a truck fire on Interstate 64 Eastbound at the HRBT. Norfolk Fire Rescue said at  11:39 a.m., hazmat units were contacted for assistance.

According to officials, no injuries have been reported.

They also advise motorists to expect major delays as all eastbound lanes were closed for several hours.

Shortly before 5 p.m. VDOT said a lane was reopened but the eastbound right lane and right shoulder remained closed but then a little after 8 p.m., all eastbound lanes were shut down again for nearly an hour "due to an incident". VDOT did not elaborate on what that incident was or if it was connected to the earlier vehicle fire.

As of 9 p.m. traffic was once again slowly moving for motorists heading from Hampton to Norfolk, but with the right lane and right shoulder were still closed.

All lanes on I-64 East at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel have since been reopened.
