12/6 UPDATE: Beginning Dec. 9, drivers will now be ticketed if they run red lights at the following photo-enforced intersections: St. Pauls Boulevard and Brambleton Avenue and at Little Creek Road and Chesapeake Boulevard.
Throughout the 30-day warning period, red light cameras detected 900 violations. Drivers received a warning in the mail, no fee was levied. Moving forward, the fine for running a red light at photo-enforced intersections is $50.
11/6 UPDATE: City officials say the 30-day warning period for cameras at St. Pauls Blvd. and Brambleton Avenue and Little Creek Road and Chesapeake Blvd. begins Friday, November 8. City officials will talk about the effort on Thursday morning.
NORFOLK - The city's first red light camera will be installed this week at the busy intersection of St. Paul's Blvd. and Brambleton Ave.
Officials say the construction will take place during off-peak hours from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Initially, there were eight intersections reviewed for the cameras, but there will only be two, City spokeswoman Lori Crouch told WVEC.com.
'The other intersection will be Little Creek Road and Chesapeake Blvd. Most likely both will be live in November,' she stated.
Violators will pay a $50 fine for running a red light.
Redflex Traffic Systems out of Phoenix is contracted with the city to install the cameras. The company already has existing contracts with Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, and Newport News.
Crouch says the contract is annual, so depending on the system and traffic studies more intersections could be added in the future.
