NORFOLK, Va. — High honors were bestowed posthumously upon a top general on Friday, 71 years after the end of the Korean War.
Representatives of South Korea came to Norfolk to present the "Order of Military Merit" medal to late U.S. Army General Douglas MacArthur. The event took place at the MacArthur Memorial.
Norfolk Mayor Kenneth Alexander accepted on behalf of the MacArthur family. The medal will now become part of the city's renowned MacArthur Memorial Collection.
"His mother, Mary Pinkley Hardy, was born here in the City of Norfolk," Alexander said. "His connection, his relationship with the City of Norfolk continues today. And we will continue to live out his legacy, this international brotherhood and sisterhood with the people of Korea."
MacArthur served as Commander of United Nations forces in Korea, leading a daring landing at Inchon. But before the war ended, the 5-star general was relieved by President Harry Truman.
MacArthur died in 1964.
