NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk police have arrested a woman in connection with a domestic-related shooting in the East Belvedere neighborhood Tuesday that turned into a barricade situation.
Alanna K. Chace, 37 has been charged with malicious wounding, domestic assault and use of a firearm, according to a release from the Norfolk Police Department (NPD).
The charges stem from an incident around 5:20 p.m. Tuesday on Dover Circle. Police were called there for a report of a man who had been shot. At the scene, officers found a 37-year-old man with several life-threatening gunshot wounds.
He was taken to a local hospital and is currently hospitalized in stable condition, NPD said.
Police said the shooting suspect, Alanna Chace, 37, was inside a nearby home. The department's Hostage/Crisis Negotiation and Special Operations Teams were called out and were able to take her into custody peacefully.
Police say Chace had self-inflicted injuries and had to be taken to a local hospital for treatment. She will be taken to Norfolk City Jail when she is released from the hospital.
Local domestic violence advocates said they are alarmed by the rate of calls they are receiving regarding domestic violence across Hampton Roads.
"With our hotline in this Hampton Roads, area we get at minimum 10 to 15 calls a week," said Meredith Williams, with Samaritan House.
This number includes domestic violence incidents and sexual assaults.
According to the Department of Justice, domestic violence increases by more than 12% in the summer months than during any other time during the year.
Young people between ages 16 and 24 are often the victims.
"It is happening everywhere, all the time," said Williams. "It's your neighbor, it's your coach, it's your friend and nine times out of ten they have gone through domestic violence or a sexual assault kind of situation."
Williams said help and resources are truly just a phone call away. You can reach them by their hotline at 757-430-2120.
