Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey returns to Hampton Roads

Over 50 circus acts will be featured at the Scope Arena and Hampton Coliseum next spring in a reimagined production of The Greatest Show on Earth.

NORFOLK, Va. — The "Greatest Show On Earth" is coming back to Hampton Roads next year.

The iconic Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus will be stopping in the 757 for the first time since 2017. There will be shows at the Hampton Coliseum from March 14 through 16, 2025. It then heads to Norfolk Scope from March 21-23.

Organizers say it will showcase "over 50 exhilarating circus acts in a fast-paced, action-packed two-hour show."

"Over the past two years, we've innovated and deepened the connection between performers and the audience, creating an unforgettable experience," said CEO Juliette Feld Grossman in a news release. "At the heart of every Ringling show is a sense of wonder and authenticity. No matter the generation, every audience member will find moments that resonate, delivering the thrilling and inspiring experience only Ringling can offer."

The current iteration of The Greatest Show On Earth is a complete rethink of a modern circus. The circus took down its tents after years of declining ticket sales as customers became conflicted about the treatment of circus animals. Costly court battles led to the end of elephant acts in 2016. Norfolk-based People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has praised the “animal-free revamp.”

The rebirth extends the circus’ long run that dates back to a time before automobiles, airplanes, or movies, when Ulysses S. Grant was president and minstrel shows were popular entertainment.

The new production design includes moveable staircases and two main stages. Audiences will have a 360-degree view with live camera feeds and virtual reality, and lighting and sound design that tracks the performer.

Tickets for the tour are available now, starting at $15.
