NORFOLK, Va. — College campuses are protesting across the country calling for the end of the war in Gaza.
Since Friday, four colleges in Virginia have made demonstrations. That includes Virginia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth University, Christopher Newport University and now some community members at Old Dominion University (ODU) have joined the protests sweeping the nation on Wednesday.
Several ODU and Norfolk police officers are set up at Chartway Arena.
Meanwhile, just a few people remain Thursday morning calling on the end of the war in Gaza.
Dozens of people were outside for the demonstration Wednesday afternoon.
Throughout the evening and into early Thursday, numbers started to dwindle. Around 1:30 a.m., only a dozen people remained outside the Chartway Arena.
ODU is the latest school to see pro-Palestine demonstrations around campus.
Attorney General Jason Miyares posted a video message online voicing his concerns about the safety of students on campus and for law enforcement officers who responded to these protests. "For those cowards that assaulted our police officers… we will use every resource to track you down – we will find you – we will make sure there are consequences to your actions."
The protest at ODU comes as the House passed a bill Wednesday expanding the definition of antisemitism.
It would allow the Department of Education to enforce anti-discrimination laws.
