Could Norfolk get a new Target on E. Little Creek Road?

A city spokesperson couldn’t confirm what the new retailer will be. However, renderings of the proposed 125,000 square foot building resembles Target.

NORFOLK, Va. — A vacant lot in Wards Corner could soon get new life.

Norfolk City Council members voted Tuesday to demolish the former Kroger, the former Work Force Development Center and the Virginia Ham Building so a new business could move in.

Additionally, a footnote in planning documents lists “Target -- E. Little Creek Road.”

Planning documents describe the retailer as a "high-quality general merchandise retail store that will include a grocery." Documents say the retailer has a national footprint with stores in all 50 states. The store is expected to employ around 150 people.

“I imagine that the upside of a big box store like that is going to be a lot of jobs and commerce. I'm sure the lows are it's taking space that could be used for other things that might benefit the community," said Norfolk resident Stephen Seybold.

People who live in the Wards Corner area told 13News Now they'd love to see the big box store move in.

“I’m a total Target-acholic," said resident Diane Fine. “I would be so thrilled. I wouldn’t have to drive to Military Highway or way out to Virginia Beach all the time, and I would be beyond thrilled.”

“It would not be good for my wallet, but it would be good," resident Faith Alperine said. "It would be nice to have more options for grocery shopping.”

We’ve reached out to Target for comment, but have not yet heard back.
