NORFOLK, Va. — In Norfolk Saturday morning, non-profits and civic organizations banded together to better connect with residents and showcase the good work going on in the city.
It’s called Engage Norfolk. The free fair at the Scope Arena allows people interested in getting more involved in their community to get a chance to hear more about local groups.
It’s a family-friendly event. Norfolk resident Jane House and her daughter Lylian say they never miss it.
“We come every year and it’s just a wonderful event! We’re always glad to come," House said.
Lylian added: “I like that it’s not just information, it’s also doing fun things like games.”
This is the seventh year of the event.
Norfolk-based nonprofits and civic organizations got a chance to offer resources to the community and give residents information on how they can get involved. From the Virginia Symphony Orchestra to Teens With A Purpose, each organization set up a table with information on what they do
Norfolk City Council member Andria McClellan organized the event. She said she hopes the event gives people who live in Norfolk a first-hand look at what’s happening in the Mermaid City.
“We have over 130 organizations from throughout the city, city departments, nonprofits; Opportunities for our residents to come down, find out how the city can help them and how they can help the city," she said. "Our theme is, turn your passion into action, and we’re really excited – this is the biggest and the best that we’ve had thus far.”
For groups that decided to take part, they say the fair gives them another platform to show people in Norfolk the good work they do and encourage them to get involved.
The event kicked off at 9:30 a.m. and ended at 12:30 p.m. For more information about the event, visit Engage Norfolk's website.
