NSU basketball player, Amber Brown, leaves hospital

Norfolk State University basketball player, Amber Brown, is now out of the hospital after she was found unresponsive on New Year's Day in her dorm room.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Norfolk State University basketball player, Amber Brown, is now out of the hospital after she was found unresponsive on New Year's Day in her dorm room.

The junior-forward was in a medically-induced coma and her family said she suffered from seizures and brain swelling.

Her mother says they are still unsure exactly what caused it, but suspect it might be her diabetes.

Just a day after leaving the hospital, Brown was already court-side watching her sister's basketball game. She says she loves being near the court, especially with her family.

"Guess this is where my heart is," she said. "She tells me about her games but it feels good to actually see her."

It's hard to tell just by looking at her that just a day before, she was still in the hospital recovering from a medically-induced coma since January 1.

"I could not get home fast enough," she said with a smile.

Her mother, Coretta, has been in Norfolk from Atlanta and by her bedside praying and watching as Amber made progress each day in the hospital, despite being in critical condition for weeks.

"Being a family, she's still hooked up to everything possible but if she opened up her eyes, that was the only thing we focused on," said her mother, Coretta Brown.

"When I woke up and my mom and the nurses told me what happened, I said 'That's why they call me the miracle child!' because I didn't remember anything," Amber said.

She says she's a miracle child who received endless support from family, teammates, and friends until the end of the toughest period. Now, she's excited to pass it on and move forward to what's next.

"Supporting my sister and my teammates while I rehab and then when I'm strong enough to walk back on campus, get back to school."
