Norfolk woman believes she could be a victim of an energy bill scam

Dominion Energy said if customers believe they were scammed, they shouldn’t hesitate to contact the energy company.

NORFOLK, Va. — A woman in Norfolk is frustrated after believing she was a scam victim.

Ruby Williams noticed that the price of her monthly energy bill has changed over the past several months.

“How and why is this happening to me? Someone who pays their bills,” said Williams.

Williams says that for 15 years, she has paid just below $80 for her energy bill by mail. However, in early 2024, she noticed a change in the price of her bill. In February, Williams says her bill went up to $164. Then, in March, her bill spiked to almost $1,100. She says that’s when she stopped paying her bills. It was over $600.00 in April but less than her previous bill.

A representative with Dominion Energy said if customers believe they were scammed, they shouldn’t hesitate to contact the energy company.

“If customers are concerned about their bills, don’t wait to call us. Waiting and hoping that things will work is not as helpful as just calling us and getting to the bottom of it,” said Cherise Newsome, a spokesperson with Dominion Energy.

Newsome said that they will investigate the issue once you contact Dominion Energy. Once the company determines a customer was scammed, Newsome says customers are still responsible for paying the bill.

“We will work with them to make payment arrangements, provide additional time, and offer the flexibility of different [payment] options,” said Newsome.
