Man faces charges after 3-year-old hurt by gun going off, Norfolk police say

It happened at the 6600 block of Jefferson Court. The child was hurt above the eye, but police said it was caused by a gun going off, not by a bullet.

NORFOLK, Va. — A 21-year-old man is facing charges after a 3-year-old boy was injured when a gun went off in Norfolk Monday night, authorities announced Tuesday.

Police arrested Daylon Jackson on a charge of cruelty to children and other charges that are unrelated to the incident Monday night.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Monday, Norfolk police were notified of a possible gunshot victim who was receiving treatment at the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters located at 601 Children's Lane. The child and his mother went to the hospital for the injury, which was just above his eye, a nurse told the city.

The victim — a three-year-old child — suffered a minor cut near his eye but is expected to be okay.

It was determined the child had not been struck by a bullet but instead "the injury had occurred from the gun as it was being discharged," according to police. Police didn't specify who fired the gun.

Police said the shooting happened at a home in the 6600 block of Jefferson Court at around 6:30 p.m.

Editor's Note: A spokesperson for the City of Norfolk initially told 13News Now that the child "accidentally shot himself," but Norfolk police later reported the child was injured by the gun and not a bullet.
